Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed today. It is commonly sought by women who are unhappy with the current size and/or shape of their breasts. Today, there are a range of options available to breast augmentation patients to help them achieve their desired look and feel of their new breasts, including choices in implant type, implant location, and incision location. If you’re interested in breast augmentation, read on to learn just what you can expect from the process.
The first step in the breast augmentation process is a consultation with a qualified surgeon. The consultation is a very important step to Dr. Sergio Alvarez because this is the time when he can discuss the patient’s goals and her desires for the outcome of the procedure. He will take the time to get to know the patient and why she is not satisfied with her current breast size and shape. Based on the patient’s goals, age, and medical background, Dr. Alvarez will provide a recommendation as to the type of breast implant. Saline implants are great for adding volume and lift, but some patients find they look and feel less natural. Silicone gel implants tend to look and feel softer and more natural, but corrective surgery is necessary in the unlikely event that these implants rupture. Gummy bear silicone implants are another option that can provide a very natural look and feel but they must e properly placed or else they will look imbalanced if they shift. Dr Alvarez also takes the time during the consultation to assess if the patient is a good candidate for the procedure and in good health emotionally and physically. If all goes well during the consultation, then the surgery will be scheduled and pre-operative instructions will be provided to the patient.
The Day of Surgery
Breast augmentation surgery is an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. There are several different possible locations for the incision. The incisions can be placed around the areola, in the crease beneath the breast, or in the armpit. These locations are generally well concealed and allow for minimal visible scarring. Once the incision is made, the implant will be inserted and placed either over or under the chest muscle. Incision and implant locations will be discussed prior to surgery. Once the implants have been placed, the incisions will then be closed with either tape or sutures and bandages may be applied. The entire procedure is completed in one to three hours.
How Long is the Recovery Period?
The recovery following breast augmentation is not intense. Dr. Alvarez does request that the patient take a few days off from work, especially if she has a strenuous job. As long as the patient follows the guidelines provided, her recovery will be speedy and successful. There will be moderate pain that can be managed with prescribed pain medication. Compression or support garments will need to be worn as the body heals.
Dr. Alvarez is a highly qualified plastic surgeon with many years of experience. He understands that breast augmentation has to be performed correctly the first time so there is a low chance of complication hat will require another surgery. Dr. Alvarez takes pride in his work and his results and is committed to helping his patients achieve the outcome they desire.
