Women come in all shapes and sizes, but having a large, perky, and shapely butt is something many covet but believe they can never have. The buttocks can change somewhat in shape and size through exercise, but a lot of women simply cannot get the look they want just by doing a few exercises and enjoying the results. For some women, exercises just can’t produce the kinds of results they’re looking for. So what can you do if you’d like a larger, rounder butt, but can’t get it on your own? A Brazilian butt lift is a surgical butt augmentation procedure that sculpts the buttocks and adds volume using the patient’s own fat from other areas of the body.
Whether the problems are caused by age, genetics, or other factors, butt enhancement can lift, tighten, and improve the overall appearance of the buttocks.
The Brazilian butt lift benefits patients in multiple ways. Aside from the aesthetic benefits of the procedure, which include fuller, more shapely buttocks, the procedures also takes unwanted fat from areas such as the stomach and uses it during the surgery. This helps to contour other areas of the body and improve overall silhouette. Because the procedure uses fat transfer techniques for injecting the fat into the buttock area, the procedure is fairly minimally invasive.

Ideal Candidates
Good candidates for the Brazilian butt lift procedure are healthy adults who would like to improve the size, shape, contour, and/or lift of the buttocks. Candidates should have enough fat to use in the transfer process and have realistic expectations about the results from the procedure. As long as these criteria are met, the Brazilian butt lift is a fairly minimally invasive and effective surgery.
Procedure
The Brazilian butt lift is usually performed on an outpatient basis under either IV sedation or general anesthesia. The first step is the extraction of the fat from one or more donor areas. These may include the stomach, hips, or thighs, and will depend on the amount of fat needed, as well as the distribution of fat throughout the body. Liposuction is performed through small incisions, and Dr. Alvarez will take out extra fat from the donor areas to ensure there is enough high quality material for grafting.
Once the fat has been retrieved, it will be washed, spun, and purified to isolate the most viable cells for transfer. Only about 25% of cells will be healthy enough for use. The prepared fat will then be injected into the buttock area carefully, shaping, lifting and augmenting the area according to the patient’s wishes. Some of the fat injected will eventually become permanently established in the treated area, for lasting improvement.
Recovery
Because the treatment revolves around a high-movement area, there are some significant activity restrictions in place during recovery, which your surgeon will outline for you. Patients should plan to take up to 2 weeks off from work, potentially more if a lot of sitting is involved during normal work. Patients should wear compression garment for 3-6 months following the procedure.
Pain and discomfort involved with the recovery can be controlled with prescribed medication, and patients should just try to take it easy and recover at their own pace. Final results should become apparent at about 6 months to one year, once swelling has subsided and the fat has had a chance to establish itself in the buttock area.
Choosing the Right Surgeon
Choosing the right surgeon is an important part of the Brazilian butt lift process. Sculpting the buttocks takes a knowledgeable and artistic surgeon, and it’s important to choose a plastic surgeon who has produced results you admire. Aside from technical skill, it is extremely important to choose a doctor you can trust—a surgeon who will listen to you and help you get the custom results you’re looking for. It is a good idea to consult with a few different surgeons before you make your final decision.
FAQs
Are the results from Brazilian butt lift permanent?
While not all of the injected fat from the procedure will survive to augment the buttocks, the idea is that the majority of the grafts will establish themselves in the area permanently. Patients will be able to see at about 6 months following treatment how much of the fat is permanent, as any fat cells that will not survive should be absorbed by the body by that time. Surgeons sometimes overfill the area a bit to compensate for the inevitable loss of some fat. Results can also be compromised if the patient gains or loses weight, so it is advised that patients maintain a stable weight.
Are there any risks involved with the procedure?
There are risks involved with any procedure, and the Brazilian butt lift is no exception, though serious complications are very rare. In addition, risks can be minimized by choosing the right surgeon. Here are some of the potential complications involved with the procedure:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Numbness
- Stretch marks
- Excessive resorption of grafted fat
- Asymmetry
Following all surgeon instructions as closely as possible is vital for minimizing the risk for complications during and after Brazilian butt lift surgery.
If I don’t have enough body fat for grafting, are there other butt enhancement options?
While fat transfer is the preferred method for buttock augmentation, it can happen that a patient simply doesn’t have enough fat in other areas for sufficient volume. In these cases, some surgeons will use silicone implants instead of fat, but this is much less common and less natural-looking. Only talking to an expert will give you the customized answers you need.
Will any scars show at the beach following the surgery?
Brazilian butt lift procedures should only produce small scars, which should hidden by clothing most of the time, and fade to become less noticeable over time. However, all surgery produces some scarring, and you should discuss the risk of scarring with your doctor before you move forward with the procedure. Prospective surgeons will be able to advise you on the expected location and size of the scars.
Will I have to avoid sitting after surgery?
Yes. This is one of the more inconvenient aspects of the recovery process, but very important for good results. Most surgeons recommend avoid sitting directly on the buttocks for 3-4 weeks, to avoid shifting the fat and compromising results.
